This vibrant 15 Minute Salmon Crudo with Citrus Soy Dressing is a fresh and elegant appetizer featuring sushi-grade salmon thinly sliced and dressed with a tangy, umami-rich citrus soy sauce. Accented by shallots, cilantro, jalapeno, lemon zest, and a hint of chili crisp oil, this dish is quick to prepare and perfect for seafood lovers seeking a light, flavorful starter.

Ingredients

Salmon and Dressing

  • 8 oz. sushi grade salmon
  • 2 Tbsp. soy sauce or tamari (use tamari to make gluten free)
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 ½ teaspoons white miso paste
  • 1 teaspoon yuzu juice

Garnishes

  • 1 small shallot (thinly sliced)
  • 1 Tablespoon coarsely chopped cilantro
  • ½ jalapeno pepper (sliced in half lengthwise, then thinly sliced with seeds removed)
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
  • 2 teaspoons chili crisp oil
  • Flaky sea salt and fresh cracked black pepper (optional, to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prep garnishes: Thinly slice the shallot, chop the cilantro, slice the jalapeno pepper after removing seeds, and zest the lemon. Set all garnishes aside for assembling the dish.
  2. Make the dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce or tamari, lemon juice, white miso paste, and yuzu juice until smooth. Set the dressing aside while you prepare the salmon.
  3. Slice the salmon: Gently slice the sushi-grade salmon against the grain into thin slices. If the salmon is difficult to slice, place the filet in the freezer for 15-20 minutes to firm it up for easier cutting.
  4. Arrange the salmon: Neatly lay the salmon slices in a circular pattern on a serving plate, creating an appealing presentation.
  5. Add the dressing and garnishes: Pour the citrus soy dressing evenly over the salmon slices ensuring thorough coverage. Sprinkle the thinly sliced shallots, chopped cilantro, jalapeno slices, lemon zest, and sesame seeds on top.
  6. Finish with chili crisp oil: Drizzle the chili crisp oil evenly over the dressed salmon to introduce a spicy, aromatic flair.
  7. Season and serve: Optionally season with flaky sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste. Serve immediately with chopsticks for an authentic experience.

Notes

  • Use sushi-grade salmon for the safest and best tasting crudo.
  • If you can’t find yuzu juice, you can substitute with a mix of lemon and lime juice for a similar citrus flavor.
  • For a gluten-free dish, ensure you use tamari instead of regular soy sauce.
  • Chilling the salmon slightly before slicing helps achieve thin, clean slices.
  • This dish is best eaten fresh and not stored, as the raw fish can lose texture over time.
