This 30-Minute Ground Beef Philly Cheesesteak is a quick and delicious twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak sandwich, using lean ground beef, sautéed onions and green bell peppers, topped with melted provolone cheese on toasted hoagie rolls. Perfect for a hearty weeknight meal that comes together fast and satisfies big appetites.

Ingredients

Vegetables

  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced

Meat & Dairy

  • 1 pound ground beef (90% lean)
  • 8 oz provolone cheese

Seasonings & Sauces

  • 1/2 teaspoon table salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

Bread

  • 4 hoagie rolls, 7” each (or 1 French baguette, cut into 4 pieces)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F to prepare for toasting the sandwich rolls later.
  2. Cook Vegetables and Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion, diced green bell pepper, ground beef, salt, garlic powder, and black pepper. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are soft and the beef is fully browned.
  3. Prepare Bread: While the beef mixture cooks, slice the hoagie rolls in half or cut the baguette into four 4-inch pieces and slice each piece in half. Place the bread halves on a baking sheet, ready for toasting.
  4. Add Worcestershire and Cheese: Once the beef mixture is cooked through, stir in the Worcestershire sauce. Lay half of the provolone cheese slices over the beef mixture, reduce the heat to low, and allow the cheese to melt, about 2-3 minutes. Stir gently until combined.
  5. Assemble Sandwiches: Use tongs to evenly transfer the beef and melted cheese mixture onto the prepared rolls.
  6. Top and Toast: Place the remaining provolone cheese slices on top of each sandwich. Bake in the preheated oven for 3-5 minutes or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and the rolls are lightly toasted.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, consider adding sliced mushrooms or hot peppers with the vegetables.
  • Use lean ground beef to reduce excess grease in the final sandwich.
  • If you prefer a more traditional Philly experience, thinly slice ribeye steak instead of ground beef, though cooking time may increase.
  • Substitute provolone with American or mozzarella cheese for a different melty texture.
  • Serve immediately for best texture and flavor, as toasted rolls can become soggy if left too long.
