This Air Fryer Baked Apples recipe combines tender, cinnamon-spiced apple filling with a flaky pie crust lattice, all cooked perfectly in an air fryer for a quick and delicious dessert. Using Granny Smith apples for tartness, the filling is thickened with cornstarch and infused with maple extract, then encased in a buttery crust and air-fried to golden perfection.

Ingredients

For the Apple Filling

  • 5 Granny Smith apples
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2½ teaspoons cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon maple extract (or 2 teaspoons maple syrup)

For the Crust and Assembly

  • 1 refrigerated pie crust (from a 14.1 ounce box)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • Optional: additional sugar for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apple Filling: Peel, core, and dice one Granny Smith apple. Place the diced apple into a small saucepan. Add granulated sugar, water, lemon juice, cornstarch, ground cinnamon, and maple extract (or syrup) to the saucepan. Stir well to coat the apples with the mixture.
  2. Cook the Filling: Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently. Continue cooking until the apple pieces are soft and the liquid thickens into a syrupy consistency, about 7-8 minutes. Remove from heat once done.
  3. Prepare the Apples for Filling: While the mixture is cooking, cut the tops off the remaining four apples and carefully hollow out the insides using a melon baller, leaving a sturdy shell. Spoon the thickened apple filling into each hollowed apple, filling up to the top.
  4. Make the Lattice Crust: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the refrigerated pie crust using a rolling pin. Cut the dough into strips approximately one-third inch thick and 4-5 inches long. Place three strips vertically over one filled apple and two strips horizontally over those, alternating strips to create an attractive lattice pattern. Repeat this lattice assembly with the remaining apples.
  5. Apply Egg Wash: In a small bowl, beat the egg with the milk to create an egg wash. Gently brush this mixture over the lattice crust on each apple. Optionally, sprinkle a little granulated sugar over the crust for extra sweetness and crunch.
  6. Air Fry the Apples: Preheat your air fryer to 350℉ if it has a preheat option. Line the air fryer basket with parchment paper if desired for easier cleanup. Carefully place the prepared apples into the basket, ensuring they are stable. Air fry for 15 minutes at 350℉ or until the crust is golden brown and crisp.
  7. Serve: Remove the baked apples carefully from the air fryer. Serve immediately, optionally topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to complement the warm, cinnamon-spiced dessert.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for the best flavor and texture as they hold shape well and balance the sweetness.
  • You can substitute maple extract with maple syrup, but add it after cooking to avoid thinning the filling.
  • Be careful not to overfill the apples to prevent spilling during cooking.
  • Ensure the lattice crust strips are securely placed to maintain the pattern during air frying.
  • If you don’t have parchment paper, lightly grease the basket to prevent sticking.
  • Serving the baked apples warm with ice cream or whipped cream enhances the dessert experience.
