Crispy and golden air fryer mozzarella sticks that are easy to prepare and perfect as a delicious snack or appetizer. These mozzarella sticks are coated with Italian-seasoned panko breadcrumbs, air fried to perfection for a crunchy exterior and gooey, melted cheese interior. They can also be made ahead and frozen for convenient cooking later.

Ingredients

Coating Ingredients

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs

Main Ingredient

  • 8 whole milk (or low-fat) mozzarella sticks

Instructions

  1. Prepare the coating bowls. Line a rimmed baking sheet with wax paper. Lightly beat the egg in a wide, shallow bowl. In a second wide, shallow bowl, combine the Italian seasoning, salt, and panko breadcrumbs.
  2. First coating and freeze. Dip each mozzarella stick into the beaten egg, ensuring it’s completely covered, then coat thoroughly in the breadcrumb mixture. Place the coated sticks on the wax paper-lined baking sheet without touching. Freeze for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour to firm up.
  3. Second coating and freeze again. Remove the mozzarella sticks from the freezer and dip each back into the beaten egg, then coat again with the seasoned breadcrumbs. Return to the baking sheet and freeze for another 30 minutes to 1 hour to solidify the coating fully.
  4. Air fry the mozzarella sticks. Preheat your air fryer to 390°F. Lightly spray the air fryer basket and the mozzarella sticks with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking. Air fry the sticks in batches as needed for 6 to 8 minutes until the exterior is golden brown and crispy.
  5. Serve immediately. Carefully remove the mozzarella sticks from the air fryer and allow them to cool just enough to avoid burning your mouth. Serve hot for the best gooey texture and crispy crust.

Notes

  • For make-ahead convenience, after the second coating, freeze the sticks solid on a tray, then transfer them to a zip-top bag for up to 2 to 3 months.
  • If cooking from frozen, air fry at a slightly lower temperature of 360°F for 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Use whole milk mozzarella sticks for the creamiest texture; low-fat options also work well.
  • Nonstick spray helps achieve a crisp crust without excess oil.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket to ensure even cooking.
