This Baked French Toast recipe offers a rich and comforting breakfast dish featuring tender challah bread soaked in a creamy egg custard and baked to golden perfection. Enhanced with warm vanilla and cinnamon flavors, it's an ideal make-ahead treat for family mornings or brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

Baking Dish Preparation

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Main Ingredients

  • 1 (16 ounce) loaf challah bread, torn into 1-inch pieces (about 8 cups)
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1¾ cups whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

For Serving (Optional)

  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
  • ¾ cup maple syrup, warmed

Instructions

  1. Prepare the oven and pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and position a rack in the center. Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish generously with unsalted butter to prevent sticking and ensure even browning.
  2. Place the bread in the pan: Tear the challah bread into 1-inch pieces and evenly spread them in the prepared baking dish, creating a uniform layer for the custard to soak through.
  3. Make the egg mixture and bake: In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, whole milk, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon until fully combined. Pour this custard mixture evenly over the bread, allowing it to soak. Bake uncovered for 45 to 60 minutes, or until the custard is fully set, the liquid absorbed, and the challah is golden brown and slightly crisp on top.
  4. Serve: Once baked, optionally dust the French toast with powdered sugar for sweetness and serve warm alongside warmed maple syrup for drizzling.

Notes

  • For best texture, use challah bread or other rich, eggy bread like brioche.
  • The soaking time varies depending on bread freshness; allow some resting time before baking if desired.
  • You can prepare this dish a few hours ahead and refrigerate before baking to enhance the custard absorption.
  • Adjust baking time slightly depending on your oven’s characteristics; look for a golden-brown crust and set custard.
  • Maple syrup and powdered sugar are optional but recommended for authentic flavor and added sweetness.
