This easy and healthy Berry Chia Jam recipe uses a blend of frozen berries and chia seeds to create a naturally sweet, thickened jam without added sugars or pectin. It's perfect for spreading on toast, stirring into yogurt, or adding to desserts.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 pound frozen berries (approximately 4 cups; mixed blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries)
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds

Instructions

  1. Cook berries: Add the frozen berries to a medium-sized pot over medium-low heat and cook for 10-12 minutes until the berries have broken down and released their juices. If using blueberries, mash them with a spoon or potato masher to achieve a smoother jam consistency.
  2. Add chia seeds: Turn off the heat and stir in 2 tablespoons of chia seeds thoroughly. The chia seeds will absorb the moisture and naturally thicken the jam.
  3. Let jam thicken: Allow the mixture to sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes. During this time, the chia seeds will swell, and the jam will thicken to a perfect spreadable texture.
  4. Store jam: Transfer the jam to a glass jar with a lid and refrigerate. The jam can be stored for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • If a smoother texture is preferred, blend the jam briefly after cooking or mash the berries well during cooking.
  • This jam contains no added sugar, relying on the natural sweetness of berries and chia seeds.
  • Chia seeds act as a natural thickener and provide added nutritional benefits such as fiber and omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Allowing the jam to sit after adding chia seeds is essential for proper thickening.
  • Use fresh or frozen berries interchangeably. Adjust cooking time slightly if using fresh berries.
