Ingredients

Bread Bowls

  • 6 round (5-6 inches) rolls, like white kaiser rolls

Spaghetti and Sauce

  • 4 ounces (¼ of a 16-ounce box) spaghetti noodles, cooked according to package directions
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 24 ounces spaghetti sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded and divided

Garlic Butter

  • 1 cup (2 sticks or 227g) butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon parsley, minced

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a sheet pan with parchment paper to prepare for baking the bread bowls.
  2. Cook spaghetti noodles: Cook the spaghetti noodles according to the package directions, drain, and set aside for later use with the sauce mixture.
  3. Prepare spaghetti sauce and beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until it is no longer pink. Drain any excess fat. Add the spaghetti sauce along with salt and pepper to taste. Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer gently for 10 minutes.
  4. Combine noodles with sauce: Add the cooked spaghetti noodles to the sauce and ground beef mixture, tossing well to coat all the noodles evenly. Cover and keep warm.
  5. Make garlic butter: In a medium bowl, combine the melted butter, minced garlic, kosher salt, and minced parsley, stirring until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed.
  6. Prepare bread bowls: Cut the tops off each roll and carefully hollow out the centers, leaving the base intact to hold the filling. Place the hollowed rolls and tops on the lined sheet pan.
  7. Brush with garlic butter: Generously brush the garlic butter mixture inside and outside of each bread bowl and their tops, using about 2-3 tablespoons per roll to ensure flavor.
  8. Fill bread bowls: Fill each bread bowl with 1 tablespoon of shredded mozzarella cheese at the bottom, then add approximately 1/2 cup of the spaghetti and sauce mixture. Top with another tablespoon of mozzarella cheese to create a cheesy crust.
  9. Bake until golden: Place the filled bread bowls in the preheated oven and bake for 7-10 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  10. Garnish and serve: Remove from the oven, garnish the tops with minced parsley, and serve warm for a delightful meal.

Notes

  • Use sturdy rolls like kaiser to prevent sogginess from the sauce.
  • Drain excess fat from ground beef to keep sauce from becoming greasy.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or plant-based meat for a lighter or vegetarian option.
  • For added flavor, consider mixing Italian seasoning into the sauce.
  • Adjust baking time depending on your oven and how crispy you like the bread bowls.
