Delightful homemade candied orange slices with a sweet, sticky syrup coating. This recipe preserves the natural citrus flavor and creates a beautiful translucent treat perfect for snacking or garnishing desserts.

Ingredients

Oranges

  • 2-3 Oranges (Mandarin oranges recommended)

Syrup

  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 1 cup Water

Optional Coating

  • 2-3 tbsp Caster sugar

Instructions

  1. Blanch the Orange Slices: Keep a bowl of iced water ready. Bring 2-3 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan. Slice the oranges into thin rounds, removing any seeds. Carefully add the slices to the boiling water and blanch them for 1 minute. Immediately transfer the slices to the iced water to stop the cooking and preserve firmness.
  2. Prepare Sugar Syrup: In a separate saucepan, combine 1/2 cup sugar and 1 cup water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar fully dissolves.
  3. Cook Orange Slices in Syrup: Add the blanched orange slices to the sugar syrup. Reduce the heat to low and simmer gently for 35-40 minutes. During this time, turn the slices every 10-15 minutes to coat them evenly. Cook until the orange rinds become slightly translucent and the syrup thickens and becomes sticky.
  4. Dry the Candied Slices: Using a slotted spoon, transfer the candied orange slices to a cooling rack arranged over a tray or parchment paper. Let them dry uncovered at room temperature for 24 hours to set the coating properly.
  5. Optional Sugar Coating and Storage: Once dried, you may toss the orange slices lightly in caster sugar for extra sweetness and texture. Store the candied slices in an airtight container in the refrigerator, where they will keep fresh for 2-3 weeks. Enjoy as a snack or dessert garnish!

Notes

  • Mandarin oranges are preferred for their thin skins and sweetness but any orange variety can be used.
  • Remove seeds carefully to avoid bitterness in the final product.
  • Ensure the orange slices dry completely to prevent stickiness during storage.
  • Use a cooling rack to allow air circulation and even drying.
  • The syrup must simmer gently to avoid burning or crystalizing.
  • Store candied slices in the refrigerator for best shelf life.
