Deliciously crispy and creamy cream cheese wontons that make a perfect appetizer or snack. These golden fried delights combine smooth cream cheese seasoned with onion powder and powdered sugar, wrapped in traditional wonton wrappers, then deep-fried to perfection. Serve them with your favorite dipping sauce for an irresistible treat.

Ingredients

Filling

  • 8 ounce block cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons powdered sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons sliced green onion (optional)

Wontons

  • 22 wonton wrappers
  • 3 Tablespoons water (for sealing)
  • Oil, for frying (about 2 inches depth)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese with onion powder and powdered sugar. Mix thoroughly until the mixture is smooth, then gently fold in the sliced green onions if using.
  2. Prepare wrappers: Lay out a wonton wrapper flat on a plate or clean surface.
  3. Fill wontons: Place about a teaspoon of the cream cheese filling in the center of the wonton wrapper.
  4. Seal wontons: Dip your index finger into the water and moisten all four edges of the wrapper. Fold one corner over to the opposite corner to form a triangle, then pinch the edges tightly to seal fully.
  5. Heat oil: In a deep frying pan or wok, heat about 2 inches of oil to 350°F (175°C). Make sure the oil reaches the correct temperature before frying.
  6. Fry wontons: Carefully add a few wontons at a time into the hot oil to avoid overcrowding. Fry for 2-3 minutes total, turning each wonton after about 1 ½ minutes to ensure even golden crispiness. Watch closely as they cook quickly.
  7. Drain wontons: Remove the cooked wontons with a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack to drain excess oil and cool slightly.
  8. Repeat: Continue frying the remaining wontons in batches until all are cooked.
  9. Serve: Serve the cream cheese wontons warm with sweet and sour sauce or your preferred dipping sauce. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Make sure the cream cheese is softened to room temperature for easier mixing.
  • Moistening the edges of the wonton wrappers properly ensures they seal tightly and won’t open while frying.
  • Maintain the oil temperature at 350°F for optimal crispiness and to prevent sogginess.
  • Work in small batches in the frying pan to avoid lowering the oil temperature and overcrowding.
  • These can be served with sweet and sour sauce, soy sauce, or spicy chili sauce based on preference.
  • For a variation, add finely chopped cooked shrimp or crab meat to the filling.
