These crispy oven-baked sweet potato fries are a delicious and healthier alternative to traditional fries. With a perfect blend of garlic powder, paprika, and a touch of cornstarch, they achieve a satisfying crunch while remaining tender inside. Quick to prepare and easy to bake, they make a perfect side dish or snack for any occasion.

Ingredients

Sweet Potato Fries

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (peeled optional and cut into fries)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika (smoked paprika optional for extra flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (for extra crispiness)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and place a baking sheet inside while it heats to get it hot, ensuring a crispier fry base.
  2. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes: Peel the sweet potatoes if desired and cut them into 1/4 inch thick fries, making them uniform for even cooking.
  3. Soak the Fries: Place the cut sweet potato fries in cold water and soak for 30 minutes. This step removes excess starch which helps achieve crispiness.
  4. Season the Fries: Drain and pat dry the fries thoroughly with paper towels. Toss them in a large bowl with olive oil, garlic powder, paprika, salt, black pepper, and cornstarch to evenly coat.
  5. Bake the Fries: Remove the hot baking sheet from the oven and arrange the fries in a single layer without overcrowding. Bake for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through until golden and crispy.
  6. Check for Crispiness: Remove from oven once fries are nicely crisp and golden. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving for the best texture.

Notes

  • Soaking the fries in water is essential for removing starch to achieve crispiness.
  • Using a hot baking sheet helps in making the fries crispier on the outside.
  • For extra flavor, smoked paprika can be substituted for regular paprika.
  • Do not overcrowd the baking sheet, as this will cause the fries to steam rather than crisp up.
  • Patting the fries very dry before seasoning is crucial to avoid soggy fries.
