These Easy Homemade Yeast Rolls are soft, fluffy, and perfect for dinner. Made using a bread machine for convenience, these dinner rolls are buttery and golden brown with a delightful tender crumb. They are ideal for any meal and can be enjoyed fresh from the oven with a topping of melted butter and flaky salt for extra flavor.

Ingredients

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water (between 90-110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter (salted, or unsalted with ¼ teaspoon additional salt)
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 2-3 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 ¼ cups bread flour (or all-purpose flour as a substitute)
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 teaspoons bread machine yeast

Seasoning

  • Kosher salt or flaky sea salt (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Ingredients for Bread Machine: Place the first seven ingredients into the bread machine pan in the order listed. Ensure the yeast is placed near the sugar and away from the salt to avoid killing the yeast.
  2. Set Bread Machine Cycle: Select the 'white', 'dough', or 'large' dough cycle on your bread machine, not the full bread bake cycle, and start it to mix and knead the dough.
  3. Prepare Baking Sheet: Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or spray with non-stick spray to prevent sticking.
  4. Divide Dough into Dough Balls: Once the bread machine cycle is finished, remove the dough, punch it down, and divide it into 16 to 24 equal pieces depending on desired roll size.
  5. Shape Rolls: Pinch the bottoms of each dough piece to form small dumpling-sized dough balls and place them upside down on the prepared cookie sheet.
  6. Brush and Season: Brush the tops of the dough balls with melted butter and sprinkle with kosher or flaky sea salt for extra flavor.
  7. Let Rolls Rise: Cover the rolls with a clean, damp tea towel and let them rise in a warm place for 30 to 40 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  8. Preheat Oven and Bake Rolls: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 12 to 15 minutes until they turn golden brown.
  9. Final Butter Brush and Serve: Immediately after removing the rolls from the oven, brush them again with melted butter and sprinkle a little flaky sea salt if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • If you do not have a bread machine, you can mix the dough by hand or with a stand mixer with the same ingredients, knead until elastic, then proceed with rising and shaping.
  • Using bread flour yields fluffier rolls; all-purpose flour can be used but may result in slightly denser texture.
  • Ensure the water temperature for activating yeast is warm but not hot to avoid killing the yeast.
  • Room temperature egg helps the dough mix evenly; if cold, warm gently by submerging in warm water for a few minutes.
  • Adjust salt in the dough accordingly if using unsalted butter by adding ¼ teaspoon extra salt.
