This Hamburger Hash recipe combines tender boiled potatoes with browned ground beef, sautéed onions, and a blend of Italian seasoning for a hearty and satisfying meal. Topped with sharp cheddar cheese melted to perfection, it’s a quick and comforting dish ideal for any time of the day.

Ingredients

Potatoes

  • 3 medium russet potatoes, peeled and chopped into bite-sized pieces

Meat & Dairy

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 2½ cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

Vegetables & Seasonings

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 medium white onion, diced
  • 2 teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon cracked black pepper

Instructions

  1. Boil Potatoes: In a pot of boiling water, cook the peeled and chopped potatoes until tender but still firm, approximately 5 to 7 minutes. Drain thoroughly and set aside to prevent mushiness.
  2. Brown Ground Beef: Heat a large nonstick skillet over high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, stirring occasionally, until fully browned. Drain excess fat and transfer the beef to a separate bowl.
  3. Sauté Vegetables and Potatoes: Reduce heat to medium in the same skillet. Add vegetable oil, diced onion, cooked potatoes, Italian seasoning, minced garlic, salt, and cracked black pepper. Toss to coat evenly and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the potatoes and onions begin to brown.
  4. Combine Beef and Cheese: Return the browned ground beef to the skillet and stir well to mix evenly with the potato and onion mixture. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top and stir until the cheese has melted completely, creating a cohesive hash.
  5. Serve: Remove the skillet from heat and serve the hamburger hash hot for a delicious and comforting meal.

Notes

  • Ensure potatoes are boiled until just tender to avoid a mushy texture in the final dish.
  • Use lean ground beef to reduce excess fat and grease in the skillet.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste, adding more salt or pepper if desired.
  • For a spicier version, add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes with the Italian seasoning.
  • This dish pairs well with a side of fresh salad or steamed vegetables.
