This Harissa Salmon recipe features tender, flaky salmon fillets coated in a flavorful, spicy harissa paste blend with cumin, smoked paprika, and honey, then baked to perfection with fresh lemon slices for a bright, aromatic finish. It's a simple yet vibrant dish perfect for a healthy and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Salmon and Marinade

  • 4 salmon fillets (skin on, pin bones removed)
  • 2 tbsps harissa paste
  • 3 tbsps olive oil
  • 2 tbsps lemon juice
  • 2 tsps ground cumin
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 ½ tsps honey
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)

For Garnish

  • Lemon slices (for topping)
  • Cilantro (chopped, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
  2. Prepare the Harissa Marinade: In a bowl, combine harissa paste, honey, olive oil, lemon juice, ground cumin, smoked paprika, a pinch of salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and spreadable.
  3. Coat the Salmon: Place the salmon fillets skin-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Spoon the harissa mixture evenly over the flesh of each fillet, spreading it all the way to the edges for full coverage.
  4. Add Lemon Slices: Lay thin lemon slices across the top of the coated salmon fillets. These will soften during baking and infuse the salmon with a fresh citrus aroma.
  5. Bake the Salmon: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the salmon flakes easily with a fork and reaches an internal temperature of 125–130°F (52–54°C) at the thickest part.
  6. Rest and Garnish: Remove the salmon from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. Before serving, scatter chopped cilantro over the top. You can remove the lemon slices if preferred or leave them on for added flavor.

Notes

  • Use skin-on salmon fillets for better moisture retention during baking.
  • Ensure salmon reaches the safe internal temperature but avoid overcooking to keep it moist.
  • Adjust the amount of harissa paste according to your preferred spice level.
  • Leftover salmon can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  • Serve with couscous, rice, or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
