Homemade Dragon Rolls are a delicious sushi variety featuring seasoned sushi rice, fresh cucumber, creamy avocado, and your choice of cooked shrimp or crab meat, all rolled in nori sheets and drizzled with spicy sriracha sauce. This recipe offers a fresh, flavorful twist to classic sushi rolls, perfect for sushi lovers looking to make their own at home.

Ingredients

Sushi Rice

  • 2 cups sushi rice
  • Rice vinegar (for seasoning)
  • Sugar (for seasoning)
  • Salt (for seasoning)

Fillings

  • 4 sheets nori
  • 1 cucumber, sliced into thin strips
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 1 cup cooked shrimp or crab meat

Additional Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp sriracha sauce
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare Sushi Rice: Rinse sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch. Cook the rice according to package instructions. While still warm, season the rice with a mixture of rice vinegar, sugar, and salt to achieve the perfect sushi rice flavor.
  2. Slice Fillings: Thinly slice the cucumber and avocado into strips. Set aside these fresh fillings for assembly.
  3. Setup Rolling Station: Cover a bamboo sushi rolling mat with plastic wrap to prevent sticking. Place one nori sheet shiny side down on the mat.
  4. Spread Rice on Nori: Wet your hands to prevent rice from sticking and spread about 1 cup of the seasoned sushi rice evenly over two-thirds of the nori sheet, leaving the top third bare for sealing the roll.
  5. Add Fillings: Arrange cooked shrimp or crab meat, cucumber strips, and avocado slices along the center of the rice-covered area. Drizzle the ingredients with sriracha sauce for a spicy kick.
  6. Roll the Sushi: Using the bamboo mat, roll the sushi tightly from the edge closest to you, applying gentle but firm pressure to form a compact cylindrical roll. Moisten the bare edge of the nori to seal.
  7. Slice and Serve: Using a sharp knife dipped in water to prevent sticking, slice the rolled sushi into eight even pieces. Garnish with toasted sesame seeds before serving.

  • Plastic wrap on the bamboo mat helps with easy cleanup and prevents rice from sticking to the mat.
  • Adjust the sriracha quantity based on your preferred spice level.
  • Serve immediately for freshest taste and best texture.
