This Homemade Hot Chocolate recipe delivers a rich, creamy, and perfectly sweetened beverage made with real chocolate and cocoa powder. Ready in just 6 minutes, it's an ideal comforting treat for chilly days, easily prepared on the stovetop for a smooth, decadent cup every time.

Ingredients

Hot Chocolate Ingredients

  • 4 cups milk (preferably whole or 2%)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup bittersweet or semisweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate bar
  • 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a small saucepan, add the milk, unsweetened cocoa powder, and granulated sugar.
  2. Heat Mixture: Place the saucepan over medium to medium-low heat. Whisk frequently to blend the cocoa powder and sugar into the milk until the mixture is warm but not boiling.
  3. Add Chocolate Chips: Add the bittersweet or semisweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate bar to the warm milk mixture. Whisk constantly until the chocolate pieces have fully melted and the mixture is smooth.
  4. Flavor and Serve: Stir in the pure vanilla extract and, if desired, a pinch of salt to enhance the flavor. Serve the hot chocolate immediately for best taste.

Notes

  • Use whole milk for a creamier, richer texture or 2% milk for a lighter option.
  • Do not let the mixture boil to avoid scorching the milk and bittering the cocoa.
  • Adjust sugar according to your preferred sweetness level.
  • Optional: Add a pinch of salt to balance and deepen the chocolate flavor.
  • Serve with whipped cream or marshmallows for a decadent touch.
