Learn how to make the perfect homemade cappuccino with rich espresso and smooth velvety milk foam. This simple recipe guides you through pulling a double shot of espresso and expertly steaming milk for a balanced, creamy coffee treat you can enjoy any time.

Ingredients

For the Espresso

  • 2 tablespoons finely ground dark roast coffee
  • 4 ounces water

For the Foamed Milk

  • 4 ounces milk

Instructions

  1. Prepare Espresso Machine: Gather all ingredients and pour 4 ounces of water into the boiler of your espresso machine.
  2. Add Ground Coffee: Place 2 tablespoons (or 2 shots) of finely ground dark roast coffee into the portafilter.
  3. Tamp the Coffee: Using a tamper, press down 2 to 3 times firmly to pack the grounds tightly and evenly.
  4. Attach Portafilter: Insert the portafilter into the espresso machine's group head and lock it in place by turning it to the right.
  5. Pull Espresso Shot: Position a cup or carafe underneath the group head. Start the machine and allow the espresso to extract for 23 to 30 seconds, aiming for 2 ounces of espresso.
  6. Prepare Milk for Foaming: Pour 4 ounces of milk into a glass measuring cup or small metal pitcher for steaming.
  7. Steam the Milk: Insert the steam wand just below the surface of the milk, keeping the tip toward the side of the container to create a vortex.
  8. Incorporate Air and Heat Milk: Engage the steam wand, moving the container slightly to allow air absorption and foam formation. Continue until the milk doubles in size with fine bubbles.
  9. Turn Off Steam Wand: Once the milk is properly foamed, turn off the steam wand and remove it from the milk.
  10. Assemble Cappuccino: Pour the foamed milk directly on top of the pulled espresso. Initially, pour foam; as the milk settles, this creates the classic cappuccino layers of foam, steamed milk, and espresso.

Notes

  • Use freshly ground dark roast coffee for best espresso flavor.
  • Consistent tamping ensures even extraction.
  • Maintain steam wand just below milk surface to create velvety foam.
  • Pour immediately after foaming to preserve the foam texture on your cappuccino.
  • Consult your espresso machine manual for specific steaming instructions as they vary by model.
