Ingredients
Angel Food Cake
17 oz angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes (approximately 1 1/2 blocks)
Fruit
1 lb strawberries, hulled and sliced
1 lb blueberries
Lemon Syrup
1/4 cup water
2 Tbsp sugar
2 Tbsp lemon juice (from 1/2 medium lemon)
Trifle Cream
16 oz cream cheese, softened at room temperature
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 cups heavy whipping cream
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
Make Lemon Syrup: In a measuring cup, combine 1/4 cup water, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 2 tablespoons lemon juice. Stir until the sugar fully dissolves. Set this syrup aside until it’s needed during assembly.
Prepare Trifle Cream: Using a mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, beat the softened cream cheese and 3/4 cup sugar together on medium speed until the mixture becomes creamy and smooth. Scrape down the bowl occasionally to ensure even mixing. With the mixer running, gradually pour in 2 cups of heavy whipping cream, then increase speed to medium-high and continue whipping until the cream is fluffy and forms soft peaks. Add 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract and beat just until incorporated.
Assemble the Trifle: Place one-third of the angel food cake cubes at the bottom of a large trifle dish (4 or 5 quart capacity) or a 9x13 casserole dish. Brush this layer evenly with one-third of the lemon syrup. Spread one-third of the prepared trifle cream loosely over the cake pieces. Top with half of the sliced strawberries. Repeat the layering by adding another one-third of cake, brushing with one-third syrup, followed by one-third of the cream, then half of the blueberries. Finish with the last layer of cake cubes brushed with the remaining syrup. Frost the top of the trifle with the last of the cream, and decorate generously with the remaining strawberries and blueberries for an eye-catching finish.
Notes
Use a large clear trifle dish to showcase the beautiful layers.
Ensure the cream cheese is softened to room temperature for easier mixing and a smoother texture.
Gently brush the syrup onto the cake to keep it moist without sogginess.
For best flavor, prepare the trifle a few hours ahead to allow flavors to meld.
This dessert is best served chilled and enjoyed within 24 hours.
