Ingredients

Vegetables

  • 8 oz. baby bella mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 yellow onion, sliced

Meat and Dairy

  • 12-14 oz. shaved beef steak
  • 6 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 Tbsp butter, divided

Other Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil, divided
  • ¾ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp black pepper, freshly cracked
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 5 hoagie rolls

Instructions

  1. Prep the veggies: Slice the green bell pepper, onion, and mushrooms into thin strips or slices as preferred to prepare them for quick sautéing.
  2. Sauté the mushrooms: Heat a large skillet over medium heat, add 1 Tbsp butter and 1 Tbsp cooking oil. Once hot, add the sliced mushrooms and cook while stirring for 2-3 minutes until they start to soften.
  3. Soften the onions and bell peppers: Add the sliced onions and bell peppers to the skillet with the mushrooms, stir and cook for an additional 3 minutes until all the vegetables soften. Remove vegetables from skillet and set aside.
  4. Cook the beef: In the same skillet, add another 1 Tbsp butter and 1 Tbsp cooking oil. Add the shaved beef steak and cook until browned and fully cooked through, stirring occasionally.
  5. Combine ingredients: Return the sautéed vegetables to the skillet with the cooked beef. Season with salt, garlic powder, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir and cook for 1-2 minutes to reheat and combine flavors.
  6. Melt the cheese: Lay the provolone cheese slices over the beef and vegetable mixture in the skillet. Turn off the heat and let the residual heat melt the cheese gently.
  7. Toast the hoagie rolls: While the cheese melts, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the five hoagie rolls on a baking sheet, spread the remaining softened 2 Tbsp butter inside each roll, and toast in the oven for a few minutes until golden brown. Watch carefully to avoid burning.
  8. Assemble the sandwiches: Evenly fill each toasted hoagie roll with the cheesesteak mixture. Serve with optional toppings like mayo, shredded lettuce, tomato slices, or jalapeños if desired. Enjoy immediately!

Notes

  • Shaved beef steak can be substituted with thinly sliced ribeye or sirloin for a similar texture and flavor.
  • Use provolone cheese slices for authentic taste, or substitute with American or mozzarella cheese if preferred.
  • Toast the hoagie rolls carefully as oven times may vary; keep an eye on them to prevent burning.
  • Worcestershire sauce enhances umami flavor but can be omitted for a milder taste.
  • Feel free to add sautéed mushrooms or extra vegetables according to preference.
  • For a spicier sandwich, add sliced jalapeños or hot sauce during assembly.
