This delicious School Pizza recipe features a crispy homemade pizza crust topped with savory mild Italian sausage, flavorful pizza sauce, and melted mozzarella cheese. Perfectly baked to golden perfection, this easy-to-make pizza serves 8 and is ideal for a family meal or casual gathering.

Ingredients

For the Dough and Pizza Base

  • 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 3 tablespoons cornmeal
  • 1 pound prepared pizza dough

For the Topping

  • 1 pound ground Italian sausage, mild
  • 3 tablespoons Italian seasoning
  • 1 13-ounce jar pizza sauce
  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 400℉. Drizzle 3 tablespoons of olive oil onto a half sheet pan and brush it evenly with a pastry brush. Sprinkle the pan with cornmeal to prevent sticking and add a subtle crunch to your crust.
  2. Stretch the Dough: Stretch the prepared pizza dough into a rectangle to fit the bottom of the sheet pan. If the dough resists stretching, let it rest for about 5 minutes to relax before continuing to stretch it out evenly.
  3. Cook the Sausage: Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the ground mild Italian sausage along with the Italian seasoning. Sauté, breaking up the meat, until the sausage is fully cooked and no longer pink, about 7 to 8 minutes. Drain any excess oil from the pan.
  4. Parbake the Crust: Place the stretched dough in the oven and bake for 7 to 8 minutes until the surface looks dry and starts to take on a golden color, ensuring a crisp bottom.
  5. Add Sauce and Toppings: Remove the crust from the oven. Spread the pizza sauce evenly across the dough, reaching the edges. Sprinkle the cooked sausage over the sauce, then top with the shredded mozzarella cheese.
  6. Bake the Pizza: Return the pizza to the oven and bake for an additional 8 to 10 minutes until the cheese is completely melted and begins to brown slightly.
  7. Serve: Remove the pizza from the oven and slice into 8 rectangular pieces. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Allowing the dough to rest during stretching helps prevent it from snapping back.
  • Using cornmeal on the pan adds flavor and prevents sticking without affecting texture.
  • Drain excess fat from cooked sausage to avoid a greasy pizza.
  • Feel free to swap mild Italian sausage for spicy for extra heat.
  • For a crispier crust, you can preheat the sheet pan before placing the dough on it.
