This single-serving Apple Crumble recipe is a warm, comforting dessert made with fresh Jazz or Honeycrisp apples baked under a buttery, cinnamon-spiced crumble topping. The dessert is perfectly portioned for one and served best with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a creamy contrast to the crunchy topping.

Ingredients

Filling Ingredients

  • 1 Jazz apple (or Honeycrisp), chopped into small cubes
  • 1 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tbsp + 1 tsp raw sugar
  • 1/8 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp lemon juice

Crumble Topping Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 2 tbsp raw sugar
  • 1/8 tsp cinnamon
  • 1.5 tbsp melted butter

To Serve

  • 1 large scoop vanilla ice cream

Instructions

  1. Prep the Filling: Chop the Jazz or Honeycrisp apple into small cubes. Place them in a ramekin or small baking dish. Pour in 1 tablespoon melted butter, 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon raw sugar, 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice. Mix gently until the apples are evenly coated with the mixture.
  2. Make the Crumble: In a small bowl, combine 3 tablespoons flour, 2 tablespoons raw sugar, and 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon. Add 1.5 tablespoons melted butter and mix gently using your hands until small clumps form. The texture should resemble slightly damp wet sand that holds together but crumbles easily.
  3. Layer It Up: Spoon the crumble topping evenly over the apple mixture in the ramekin, covering the apples lightly but not necessarily fully. This will create a delicate topping for the crumble.
  4. Bake It Off: Place the ramekin in a toaster oven preheated to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 30 to 35 minutes. The topping should turn golden brown and the edges of the apple mixture should be bubbling. If using a standard oven, bake for approximately 35 to 40 minutes. If the topping looks pale, bake for a few extra minutes until golden and bubbly.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Allow the crumble to cool slightly before serving. Top with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream for a classic touch or substitute with rose saffron kulfi for an exotic Desi twist.

Notes

  • Use Jazz or Honeycrisp apples for the best balance of sweetness and texture.
  • Melting the butter before mixing ensures even coating and better crumble texture.
  • Adjust baking time slightly based on your oven type and size of the baking dish.
  • Let the crumble cool for a few minutes after baking to avoid burning your mouth and to allow the topping to set.
  • Vanilla ice cream is optional but highly recommended to complement the warm dessert.
  • For a gluten-free option, substitute the flour in the crumble with almond or oat flour.
