Ingredients

For the Tofu

  • 8 oz tofu, drained and cut into ½-inch cubes
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 tbsp hot sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Salad

  • 1 small head romaine lettuce, roughly chopped
  • ½ English cucumber, thinly sliced
  • 1 small head red cabbage, shredded
  • 1-2 green onions, sliced
  • ½ cup carrot, shredded
  • ¼ cup roasted peanuts
  • 2 tbsp cilantro, chopped
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges for serving

For the Dressing

  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp tamari
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp honey
  • ¼ tsp garlic, minced
  • ½ tsp ginger, minced
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Drain and Cube Tofu: Begin by pressing and draining the tofu thoroughly to remove as much moisture as possible. Pat it dry with a clean towel and cut into bite-sized ½-inch cubes to ensure even cooking and crispiness.
  2. Prepare the Vegetables: Roughly chop the romaine lettuce, thinly slice the English cucumber and green onions, shred the red cabbage and carrots. Combine all these fresh veggies in a large salad bowl as the base of your salad.
  3. Make the Dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together rice vinegar, tamari, sesame oil, honey, minced garlic, minced ginger, and sesame seeds until well combined and smooth. Set the dressing aside to allow flavors to meld.
  4. Cook the Tofu: Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the tofu cubes and cook for 6 to 7 minutes, flipping occasionally to ensure all sides become golden and crispy. Season the tofu with salt, black pepper, and a few dashes of hot sauce while cooking for added flavor and heat. Remove cooked tofu from heat and set aside.
  5. Assemble the Salad: Pour the prepared dressing over the salad vegetables in the bowl. Add the cooked tofu on top and gently toss everything together to evenly coat the ingredients with dressing and distribute the tofu.
  6. Serve: Serve the salad bowls with lime wedges on the side for squeezing, topped with chopped cilantro and roasted peanuts to add freshness and crunch. Enjoy this fresh, flavorful, and spicy tofu salad immediately.

Notes

  • Pressing tofu well is key to achieving a crispy texture when cooking.
  • Adjust the amount of hot sauce in the tofu and dressing based on your preferred spice level.
  • Use tamari to keep this dish gluten-free, but soy sauce may be substituted if needed.
  • To make this vegan, replace honey with maple syrup or agave nectar.
  • Roasted peanuts add a nice crunch but can be omitted or replaced with toasted seeds for nut-free options.
