These Sweetened Condensed Milk Snowball Cookies are delicate, melt-in-your-mouth treats featuring a tender dough made with butter, flour, and sweetened condensed milk. Lightly baked to a pale finish and generously coated with powdered sugar, these cookies offer a perfect balance of sweetness and softness, ideal for tea time or festive occasions.

Ingredients

Cookie Dough

  • 1/2 cup (113 g) unsalted butter, cubed and chilled
  • 1 cup + 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk

Coating

  • 1/2 cup icing sugar (powdered sugar)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking tray with parchment paper or a cookie sheet and set aside to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients and Butter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the chilled, cubed unsalted butter, all-purpose flour, and a pinch of salt. Rub the mixture together with your fingertips until it resembles wet sand, ensuring a crumbly yet cohesive texture.
  3. Add Sweetened Condensed Milk: Pour in the sweetened condensed milk and gently mix the dough by hand until it just comes together, being careful not to overmix to keep the cookies tender.
  4. Shape the Cookies: Scoop 1 tablespoon of dough using a measuring spoon or cookie scoop and roll it into smooth, even-sized balls. Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart to allow for gentle expansion.
  5. Bake: Place the tray in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the bottoms of the cookies turn lightly golden while the tops remain pale to maintain the delicate texture.
  6. First Sugar Coating: Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool for about 5 minutes. While still warm, gently roll each cookie in powdered sugar to apply the first coating, then transfer them onto a wire rack.
  7. Final Sugar Coating: Once the cookies have fully cooled, roll them again in powdered sugar for a thick, snowy finish, enhancing their classic snowball appearance and sweetness.

Notes

  • Use chilled butter to create the perfect crumbly texture resembling wet sand when mixed with flour.
  • Avoid overmixing the dough once the sweetened condensed milk is added to prevent tough cookies.
  • Rolling the cookies twice in powdered sugar provides the signature snowy look and an extra touch of sweetness.
  • Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
  • If you prefer, you can substitute icing sugar with confectioners’ sugar for the coating.
